AO SUL DO MUNDO
Chilean Patagonia holds the second biggest accumulation of sweet water after Greenland, yet, the landscape is dry and the region is barren. These series explores this contradiction, were the water is hold frozen, or flowing with untameable force.
This work is focused in the Chilean Patagonian territory, fundamental part of the national identity, and its relationship with the most important natural resource: water.
A landscape that has been historically isolated, with one main road enabled only 30 years ago, has resulted in a region that has maintained its solitary and wild character. A place where the frenetic rhythm of contemporary societies hasn’t yet settled, and we can still enjoy the slow pass of time.
In this region, in the Ice Fields, lies one of the biggest reservoirs of sweet water in the world. These waters are frozen or defrosting, flowing fiercely downhill through the mountains and the steppe, showing the amazing colours of the minerals it contains. In this way, this wild landscaped is painted in yellow and blue.
Because of the force and flow of these rivers, they have been the target of several exploitation projects, which endangers the spirit of the region. The determination to make and show this project arises from this, to highlight the amazing untamed landscapes from Patagonia. While some of them are yellow, still and steppic, others are blue, stormy and fluid. Both constantly defined by their relationship with water.
The objective of this work is to emphasize and appraise the fundamental characteristics of the Chilean Patagonia, keeping in mind the popular proverb
“In Patagonia, those who rush end up losing time”
